Michael Punke

is the author of four books including The Revenant, #1 New York Times bestseller and basis for the Academy Award-winning film. In his diverse professional career, Punke has served as the US ambassador to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, history correspondent for the Montana Quarterly, and an adjunct professor at the University of Montana. As a high school and college student, he worked summers as a "living history interpreter" at Fort Laramie National Historic Site in Wyoming. He lives with his family in Montana and is an avid outdoorsman.

Books in Common NW welcomes historian Cassandra Tate to share her book UNSETTLED GROUND, with writer Jane Kirkpatrick.

A nineteenth-century attack by Native Americans on a Presbyterian mission in what would become the Oregon Territory, now called the Whitman Massacre, proved to be a turning point in the history of the American West. Unsettled Ground examines the tangled legacy of that event.

In 1836, Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, devout missionaries from upstate New York, established a Presbyterian mission on Cayuse Indian land near what is now the fashionable wine capital of Walla Walla, Washington. Eleven years later, a group of Cayuses killed the Whitmans and eleven others in what became known as the Whitman Massacre. The attack led to a war of retaliation against the Cayuse; the extension of federal control over the present-day states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and parts of Montana and Wyoming; and martyrdom for the Whitmans. Today, the Whitmans are more likely to be demonized as colonizers than revered as heroes. Historian and journalist Cassandra Tate takes a fresh look at the personalities, dynamics, disputes, social pressures, and shifting legacy of a pivotal event in the history of the American West.

We're thrilled to be spending an evening with two fierce writers of the American West! Books in Common NW hosts Pam Houston and Amy Irvine, as they share their recently published collection of letters, Air Mail. 

The two were paired together for Orion's Magazine's "Together Apart" series of letters from isolation. During a time when the country was wrought with turmoil as residents struggled with coping with the pandemic, rising numbers of infected and dead, as well as addressing social inequalities, Houston and Irvine found their letters to one another nearly as necessary as breath. Air Mail: Letters of Politics, Pandemics, and Place is a revealing collections of moments captured in these historic times. We’ve never been one to rush the holiday season, but 3 primary factors this year have coalesced to make this necessary.

When the country shut down back in March, many spring book releases were postponed or canceled because manufacturers, warehouses, and shipping companies had to abide by local lockdown mandates and social distancing guidelines. Those postponed releases are all happening now -- along with those already scheduled for this fall. This has led to paper shortages and backlogs at the two (yes, only two) book printers in the US. 

We expect this year’s hottest titles to sell out FAST. If the publishers run out and can’t reprint, we may not be able to restock. So, if you see something you like, don’t wait, as it might not be available later. This also goes for our nonbook merchandise like puzzles, cards, calendars, and other gift items. Most of those we will not be able to reorder again before the holidays.

Shipping is taking longer than usual -- to us from our suppliers and to you. All the major shipping companies are working extra hard while having an extra heavy load, and this will likely only get worse as the season progresses. 

Country Bookshelf may be large, but we still must limit our capacity for everyone’s safety. Our first priority is people: customers and staff. Shopping early avoids crowds and gives everyone time to select special holiday gifts. We don’t want you to suffer waiting outside in wintry Montana weather. 

So what should you do?

SHOP EARLY: Usually a last-minuter but have specific titles in mind? Shop in October and November for the best selection or to allow time for us to get in your special requests.

PREORDER: If you already know you want new books such as The Promised Land by Barack Obama, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 15: The Deep End by Jeff Kinney, or The Best of Me by David Sedaris, preordering now will guarantee your copy. This also helps us know how many to order and keeps you from being disappointed.
